We got my German Shepherd when I began elementary school and we had to put her to sleep the year I was graduating high school.  She was such a great dog to grow up with and we always had so much fun…Continue

Jennifer, I am late in reading your post but I am so sorry for the loss of your pet.   I totally understand the pain inside.  Hugs to you! Hope you see this...

Eight grade I had my first cat, russan blue fur and Persian mixed, she was a one of a kind! She was my best friend. Not too long later we got another cat and they grow up together. It was on late June last year she passed away at 16, she was sick at an old age, I love her so much. Unfortunaly Oct 3 the same year I end up losing my fiancé, he was hit by a speeding car while biking to the store. I have never felt so lost, still everyday I felt this pain inside me, I cry thinking of him, I will never be the same without him.

Of all the groups on here, this one has the fewest members. I think that part of the reason for that is because of all the losses a person may experience, the loss of a beloved pet and the horrible grief that follows, is one of the most misunderstood and " looked down upon" types of grief. Alot of people feel like they can't express they're grief over a beloved pet for fear of  having people invalidate that grief by such comments as "you can get yourself another pet" or "Get over it! It was just a dog!" (Or a cat, or whatever the beloved pet was!) I think it's a sad shame that those grieving the loss of a beloved pet can't express they're grief freely like those who have lost a beloved human. There are some people whose only family they may have is their dog or cat. Or, even if they do have family, may find their pet to be more loving and loyal than the family members!  As a Christian I have found some interesting scriptures concerning animals, in the Bible. For example, in 2 Samuel 12:1-3, the prophet Nathan tells the story of a man who had a little lamb that was "like a daughter to him." Here is a man of God acknowledging with his story that our pets can become like family to us. No shame in that!  Job 38:41 speaks of a Raven's hungry young chicks as"crying out to God for help", something we humans do when we are in sore straits. And most people are familiar with Jesus'  words about the sparrow and how not one of these tiny birds goes unnoticed by our Heavenly Father.(  Matthew 10:29 )  Animals are precious to God, so why shouldn't they be to humans who are "made in God's image?" ( Genesis 1:27 ) So I dearly hope that if someone has lost a beloved pet, they will consider these things and not let anyone stop them from expressing their deep feelings here on this group.

Thank you so much, Kris, for the info about the Association for Pet loss and Bereavement. I truly appreciate it!  I see that you and I have in common that we have both lost our mom's. My mom took a drug called "Plavix" and it caused her to hemorrhage in her brain after she had been taking it for two years. Found out later that it had done that to a lot of people and the company that manufactures it was sued. However, the doctors still prescribe it. I guess I need to join that group on here called "Multiple Losses" between mom, my dog, and now my best friend who has terminal cancer! Thanks for your good thoughts and prayers. I will keep you in mine too! I am looking forward to the fulfillment of this scripture in the Bible-- Isaiah 25:8--"He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe the tears from all faces..."

There is an organization, Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement which has chat rooms for persons following the loss of a pet and also for those who are facing a pet loss in the near future.   Here's another link with some more information: http://www.aplb.org/chat/chat_petloss.php#ante

These appear to be free.   And the MSU Pet Loss hotline is as well as it staffed by vet students.   You might also want to contact your local community mental health services or if your employer has an employee assistance program, you may find them to be helpful.  Sending you good thoughts and prayers.

Movies about grief that actually understand loss — any recommendations?

Hi everyone  I’m new here and honestly never thought I’d need a space like this, but here I am. I’ve been living with grief for a while now, and some days it’s quiet, some days it hits out of nowhere.Lately I’ve been watching movies about loss and grief - not to make myself sad on purpose, but to feel understood. Sometimes seeing grief on screen helps when it’s hard to explain what’s going on inside. The problem is that many “grief movie lists” online feel very surface-level or overly dramatic,…See More
