About Me:
I am an IT professional. Live in Toronto. My late wife and I have one son, 23 years old.
About my Loss:
My wife had a drinking problem since she was a teenager. She went through rehab in her late 20s. She was 5 years sober when I met her in 1989. But within a year she had relapsed. We got married and had a son. The first few years were the typical drinking and arguing scenarios. She seemed to quit when our son become school age and we had some marriage counselling. She may have relapsed without my knowledge over the next 15 or so years, but mostly I believe she was sober. But two years ago, she started again. I have no idea why. Sometimes i would notice, and other times she completely fooled me. But I knew there was something wrong because she lost all interest in doing anything except stay home. In the past two weeks, she became ill with a cough. It got worse and worse. Then I found the bottle. I didn't start an argument. There is no point. But I truly thought she would follow her usual routine of getting tranquilizers and going through withdrawls at home. But she quickly become to ill to get out of bed at all and finally fell on the floor. We couldn't get her up. She weighed over 250 LBS. So against her objection we phoned 911. She was admitted to the ICU where she was diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis with severe liver damage. 70% chance of survival. A complicating factor was that she had stopped taking her thyroid medication. Huge mistake. Her son and I stayed with her as much as we could except to eat and sleep over the next 5 days. Nothing the doctors did would work. She progressivvely got worse until we consented to put her on life support in a last ditch attempt to keep her alive long enough to stablize her system(s). But she went downhill and the DR advised letting her go. Life support was removed and she died in less than 10 minutes as we watched. A horror show. And my 23 year old son had to watch. She died on his birthday.

My mom died 4 months ago

My mom had pulmonary fibrosis. She was sick for a few years. It was funny how when my grandmother smoked, my mom would always say-I’m gonna die from second hand smoke. My mom never smoked. She died from lung disease. Ironic.I was fine at the funeral. Planning. Talking to everyone. I thought u handled it great. Now 4 months later, I’m a mess. Some days I’m perfectly fine, but others I can’t walk down the street without crying. I keep thinking that I haven’t talked to her in a while & I…See More
