About Me:
Im a 22 year old nursing student. I live on an island that has a pretty close community. I have three brothers and a dog named Hank. My boyfriend and I just celebrated our three year anniversary.
About my Loss:
There's a few:
September of '07 my grandfather dropped dead of a heart aneurism. September '08 a hurricane hit my hometown. July '09 my father was diagnosed with cancer. November '10 my grandmother died. November '11 my aunt was rediagnosed with cancer.
My father is the family bread-winner (still) and my mother is unemployed due to her care taker duties. She took care of my grandmother for the last 7 months of her life (my grandmother lived across the country) and takes care of my dad. She does what she can for my aunt, but my aunt's husband and son do a lot.
Out of all of those my father is the most painful. My dad was diagnosed on a Wednesday told me the following day and was in emergency surgery that Friday (two days after he found out) to remove the 7lb tumor that had engulfed his L kidney. They did a full body scan and found out he had multiple tumors throughout his lungs. He was qualified for a drug study at MD Anderson December '09. He was removed from the study in sping '11 because he formed a brain tumor and a few of the tumors in his lungs had doubled in size since the beginning of the treatment.
My dad had his second major surgery July '11 in his right occipital lobe. He lost his L peripheral vision in both eyes. He also lost the ability to drive. After the surgery they did another scan and found out he also had a tumor growing in his motor cortex. He did four treatments of whole brain radiation and was bed ridden for a whole month. He was rushed to the hospital once for dehydration and malnutrition. We then realized whole brain radiation was no longer an option. December of '11 we also found out he has a tumor on his L adrenal gland. His next surgery will probably be sometime this spring to have that removed. The pressure from this tumor makes my dad bed ridden some days.
The last few times he's gone to the doctors my dad has been told to stop working, stop working out and to go home and die. My father is not the lay down and die type. My dad has about 12- 18months to live if it was up to the general oncologist at neighboring hospitals. They see my father as a statistic that has already beaten the odds. My father is currently taking his treatment into his own hands and has several plans.
