I am 37 and very recently became a widow. I recently lost my husband of 7 years on March 21, 2014. He was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease due to cirrhosis 3 years ago. I moved from my family and home state to be with my husband 7 years ago and I am now all alone except children. He was my world. I just wish he could have stopped drinking when he was diagnosed 3 years ago. Things could be so different now if he did. He did not stop drinking until December 2013, when he was too sick to drink.

Dear Bonnie,

Your story reminds me how the doctors say that alcoholism is a disease or a sickness. It seems that no matter how much they want to stop drinking - they can't. Surely your husband did not want to die, but those addicted to alcohol keep drinking to their own injury. My son is in that group. However, unrealistic, since he checked himself into the rehab center for the second time I choose to believe that he will stop drinking. I hope so. . .

Releasing Grief—How? Please read this article. It explains how talking is one of the best things you can do. I will be happy to listen anytime at all.

My Fathers Loss

Many years ago, I lost my father after his battle with colon cancer that later spread to his bones. The grief stayed with me longer than I expected. Ambrosia Behavioral Health helped me work through that loss, understand my emotions, and find healthier ways to cope and move forward. https://www.ambrosiatc.comSee More
