How do you respond when someone you know doesn't know about your loss, and they ask how you have been?

I had that happen to me just yesterday. A teacher from where my kids all went to elementary school ran into me and asked me how old all my children were now. It was pretty horrible, I had to ask her if she had heard about my son and then when I told her what happened to Zach, she said oh now that you told me I did hear about it but I didn't remember that was your sweet boy. It was so horrible for me and for her. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any way to make it easier for everyone, I guess it will always be  horrible there is no way to take it the pain away.
