Families' experiences of taking patients home from critical care to die

Sadly, some patients are too ill to survive their critical illness.  If it is possible, patients may prefer to die at home, rather than in hospital.   There has been research into the practicalities of arranging this from the point of view of healthcare professionals, but not from the perspective of patients and their families.

Miss Yanxia Lin, a PhD Student from the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southampton is undertaking research into this area, and believes that by knowing and understanding more about this experience, (e.g. what worked well, what could have been better, what information might have helped families to prepare for, make this decision and know what to expect etc), it will help to inform and improve future patient and family care.

Can you help?

This research project is currently being developed. At the moment Yanxia is looking for at least one family member of an patient in critical care unit who is interested in hearing more about her research plans and may be willing to help and work with her. Anyone with experience of having a relative in ICU or other critical care units, would be able to help by giving their thoughts about this topic.  She would particularly like relative advice when developing the project plan and relative information.

Contact Yanxia by email at yl8g14@soton.ac.uk if you can help, or for more information.
