My Mum had the same thing Steven Hawking has. She passed about 2 months ago. When dad told my brothers and I, I felt shocked for about a minute but that was it, it didn't last very long. I mostly feel relieved. I've had a few moments when I've felt overwhelmingly sad, and I've only cried twice since then.

Everyone goes on about how you're supposed to feel numb for a while afterwards and it seems like everyone cries every other day when it wears off. I haven't felt any of that.

No two people grieve the same. There are as many ways to express grief as there are people grieving. Also there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Myself, I haven't stopped crying for and thinking about my wife since she passed away from breast cancer last March.
