But it seems like a lifetime now that my Dad died a week ago.
Mom is living by herself. She says she wants to. We shall see. I tell her to cry whenever she can and let it out. I cry when I am not around her, trying to be strong for her.
Last night I was not strong when I realized I would not see my Dad walk into my house again or joke with my girls. They would not get to know Grandpa as the great Dad I had growing up and into adulthood. I am 34 and got to know him for those years. He…

I hated my birthdays after the age of 22. Honestly, I thought birthdays were for young people waiting to become teenagers, turn 16, 18 and 21. Over the years, I whined and at times cried on Feb. 23. I remember a couple birthdays my mom called me and I just said "uh, thanks, you know I don't really like celebrating my birthday." Wow, did those words come back to haunt me. Yesterday, the biggest voice of my life was unheard. No phone call from my mom. I did receive many calls, birthday wishes and…

Two millennia ago, Yeshua taught about the kingdom of God and lived the model humankind could emulate in its evolution toward spiritual maturity. Some individuals today model Yeshua’s teaching, and we can see glimmers of it in books and movies that end with love conquering all and people living together in brotherhood. But for society as a whole, Yeshua’s teachings have had little effect. We are living in a spiritual dark age.
Materialism has consumed the collective psyche of…

Today's the 4 week anniversary of my son Jack's death. I feel like I've been trudging through chest deep muck. And seriously, it feels either like I've felt this way forever or for a few hours. I can't believe that it has been 4 weeks since he left this earth. I'm journalling notes to him most nights. There are so many things that happen each day that I would normally tell him. It's hard to see his friends at the grocery store or gas station and know that their life is going. I almost resent…

“The healing is the mourning part and you have to find a way to express your emotions in an open, public manner through creative ways or physical activities, such as walking, running, sports, gardening, or getting a therapeutic massage. Mourning is a process and not an event. It's individual. Everyone will heal in different ways and at different rates,” - Mark… Continue

Sit quietly today for just a few minutes and clear your mind. Then clear something from your schedule. You and your family are more important than any to do list.

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor
gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student
and had breezed through the questions until I read
the last one:
'What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?'
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the
cleaning woman several times. She was tall,
dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name?
I…

I apologize already: this will be a boring post. I just want to put down a little history, mostly to help me keep things straight in my mind.
This story starts in 1975, less than a year after I met my husband. In that year, he was in a motor vehicle accident and suffered a number of serious internal injuries. Repairing the damage required that he receive 14 units of blood and as it turns out, one of those units was contaminated with a slow, secretive, but deadly…

I always thought my husband could fix anything. I mean he always had! If I was upset or angry, he just seem to talk me through it and I was Ok again.
Then mom died, and even Mark couldn't fix it.
I remember the night I got the phone call that mommy had passed away. My sister called and told me mom had passed away, (I have two sisters in Oregon, and two brothers in Utah) but it's like I wasn't really hearing it. I remember saying 'What' like three times, then just yelling.…

My husband died almost three years ago. He was really much too young to die and I was much too young to become a widow but there is usually not too much you can do about these things. My mother-in-law has been a widow for a long time and has many widow-friends and she says that in her experience, three years is kind of a magic number for adjusting to your Changed Life after losing your partner. She is quite an expert on this sort of thing and I trust her judgment. Am I expecting some sort of…

This first person I thought about sharing this poem with was my son, Jack. He wrote so many poems and songs. I've spent much of the past few weeks picking up the phone to text message or call him.
Perfection Wasted
And another regrettable thing about death
is the ceasing of your own brand of magic,
which took a whole life to develop and market -
the quips, the witticisms, the slant
adjusted to a few, those loved ones nearest
the lip of the stage,…
