About Me:
I am a 60 year old woman. I have been downsized after 30 years and I am now living on unemployment and widows benefits. My sister is currently living with me. I am just finishing a major renovation on our house and plan to sell and move out of state.
About my Loss:
In 08/09 my husband finally retired just short of 66. The day after he retired I drove him to the hospital to find out that he had a brain tumor. He was never sick his whole life. He had brain surgury and for the next 17 mos. we went the radiation, chemo route. He passed peacefully at home on Dec. 22, 2010.
Are You a Service Provider? If Yes, please tell us about your service.
Since my husband's death I started taking a friend of a friend to Cancer Center of America in Phila. for her chemo treatment. My husband always said that if he had to go through it alone he didn't know what he would do. this person was alone and needed help. I know he would have wanted me to help if I could. I think it is good for me to help where I can. So far it has not been too difficult. Update, my friend passed away from ovarian cancer on July 11, 2012. I really thought she was going to beat it. RIP Barbara!

I am so glad you were able to have him home last year on his birthday.  Memories like that are so precious.  Thinking of you and sending you some hugs on this his birthday.

Jeanne,

What a great friend you are!  I lived in Philly for the first 30+ years of my life and then we started moving around...You are in a good place for care.  Todd died here in Atlanta....I doubt if his care would have been different here once he was accurately diagnosed - but the first doctor he saw mis-diagnosed the symptoms so the cancer had an additional 10-12 months to grow and metastasize before getting the correct diagnosis.  So sad to lose someone to stupidity!  While you are in Philly, if you get a free second while your friend rests, go to center city and enjoy some of the sights and things to see.  It will give you a much needed respite!   If you get time, and she is well enough, the Jersey shore points are only a 2 hour drive away and might be a fun place for your friend to re-group for a few days.  Thank you for being an advocate for your friend - you and I both know how much that means!  God bless you for your kindness and your friend in her fight against this dreaded cancer. - Gina

Thank you for befriending me. I notice you have added photos, I've been trying to add a profile photo with no luck. How do you do it?

Jeanne!  Thank you for your reply!  My husband was 53 when he died on 2/28/11 of colorectal cancer - he had been sick & treating for 4 years.  We were almost empty-nesters - my last one is a junior in high school - and, like you, were looking very forward to spending our retirement years enjoying life together.  Todd never drank or smoked and I can't believe he had cancer!  I'm a nurse - we did all the right things.  But, God only takes the best and he was chosen!  We live in Atlanta, but are from the Philadelphia area and have a house at the Jersey Shore.  Small world.  You and I are in a special club - not by choice, but we're there nonetheless.  I, too, want to be strong and move on to keep my children from becoming stalled in their lives.  I'd love to share experiences with you and it helps just to talk to others who are so new to widowhood.  God Bless us all!

Gina

Hi Jeanne, thank you for your comments.  I am sorry for your loss as well.  I feel like someone transported to me to another country and I can't speak the launguage!  It is so hard for me to be around people now.  I have been with my husband since I was 18.  He was planning on retiring in February 2011 and passed just 6 weeks before that could happen.  I joined this website to connect with people that would understand this.
