My father came from a small island off the coast of Croatia and was a Merchant Marine in his early years, before immigrating to the United States.  He named me Stella, after Stella Maris, Star of the Sea, the ancient term used by seafarers for the Virgin Mary.  He was a strong Catholic and had a special affinity for Mary.  I am very proud of this piece, and whenever I look down I feel that my dad is right here with me.  He did not like tattoos, especially on his daughters!  But I also know he'd be secretly honored that I would do this in his memory.  I miss him terribly. It's only been 4 months, and I feel having this is helping me to heal.
