About Me:
47, registered nurse, mother of two children, ages 14 and 20, married 27 years
About my Loss:
My dear husband, Mike, had been ill with a cough for two weeks. Had been to doctor about every other day, thought to have bronchitis, having antibiotics changed several times. He was healthy except for Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellatus. He was a teacher. On 8-18, he went to school for teacher workday. At noon, called me at work to come get him and take him to the doctor. I did, and she took x-ray, changed antibiotics, started looking for a pulmonary consult for the cough, drew a cbc, lytes, and gave him an albuterol inhaler then sent us home. At home, he used the inhaler and felt so much better, able to get a deeper breath, ate some supper, and slept about 6 hours. The next morning, I asked him if he wasn't going to stay home. He said no, that he felt pretty good and it ws the first day of school and he wanted to go. I didn't hear from him all day. I got home from work and about 5:30, I called him. He sounded pretty upbeat and said "I'm in the driveway, I'll be right in." He came in and I asked how he was. He said okay, that he was hot and he was going to take a shower. He showered and dried off and was getting dressed when I saw him turn toward me in the doorway of our bathroom and collapse. I literally jumped over him and saw that he was pulseless and not breathing. I called for our 14 year old to call 911 and I started cpr. The paramedics arrived within minutes and worked on him a good while in the house and then in the ambulance. They continued to defib, do compressions and ventilate, and give emergency drugs all the way to the hospital. I rode in the ambulance. At the hospital, they continued the code for several cycles. By then, he had been down nearly an hour. He never once got a heart beat back. I had lost my 50-year-old husband. Me, a widow at 47.

I don't know what this means, but I have been a nurse for 25 years.
