Does anyone else lie awake at night paranoid that you're already "contaminated"? So many people close to me have got/had cancer. Apart from my Mum passing away from it in April, a cousin also died 3 months later. I wonder if I should get checked out, before it's too late, but can't bring myself to go to the doctors - especially as there isn't really anything much wrong with me, I'd feel silly ...

Hi KT,

Cancer is not contagious. Certain kinds run in families and if you know that I would get checked out. My younger brother died of Multiple Myeloma in 99 and the Drs. recommended that his sibiblings get checked out. None of us have, but not because we are afraid to. We believe his cancer came from something other than heredity. I am surrounded by people that have had, do have and have passed from cancer. I have no fear that because of that I will get cancer.

It sounds like you are really having a problem with it and maybe you should ask your Dr. if they think that you should be tested if there is a test for that type of cancer to do so. Try not to lose yourself in worrying about something that will probably never happen. Stress in itself can bring on cancer sooner. I don't know what type of cancer your mother had, but depending on the type you might be wise to get it checked out and put your mind at rest about it.

Take care of yourself

Jeanne

Kelly,

I worry about cancer. the type my mom had is hereditary that's very scary the docs told me to get tested when I'm 40. I hope I do not get it. I do not want to have to put my kids through what I witnessed my mom go through. It would be nice to die from normal things like old age.  I freak myself out alot. Every ache and pain I have lol I'm defiantly paranoid!!!!

Thanks Melissa, it's nice to know I'm not alone in feeling this way. I will have to go to the doctor one day but will have to pluck up the courage first. My Mum was so ill for so long without being seen to properly, that by the time they found out it was cancer they couldn't even track the primary source, so that worries me too.

God Bless and try not to worry too much about it too (I know, easier said than done lol)

I have lost many friends and relatives to cancer.Best get yourself the normal yearly checkup and mamogram , colonoscopy and any other test .My wife died from cancer Dec 16th. It started with bladder cancer..After her blabber was removed it continued to move to other parts of her body. She did all the right things and it still killed her. And yet she has a cantankerus father that is still alive at one hundred. My wife was seventy one . All you can do mostly is have faith in your God.I myself am ready anytime he wants me. Life has pretty much lost all meaning  ahter my Babe died .and all i want is to be with her..........Ron

It was not supposed to be like this

In 2014 I met the most amazing man ever. We were both in our very early 20s and were looking for different things at the time. We ceased communication for roughly 6 months. During which time, he completed basic training and joined the Air Force. By the time we reconnected he was already at his first duty station.. 8 hours away.We decided we wanted to continue our relationship and proceeded to cultivate a deeply emotional connection. Regular calls and video chats, visits while he was home on…See More
